Why? My guess is that audio books in general are so convenient to use. Many of us prefer to venture into the scenes of an audio book without delay more willingly. Spending our precious time researching every detail about its creation remains a distant “maybe”.

On the other hand, there are a few details about recorded books you want to know.
What for?
’Cause knowing them makes it easier for you to navigate around audio books with more confidence. Your improved “shopper’s education” to make the right choice is worth it.

I admit I used to be unaware of even the basic terms about audio books myself. So, I asked questions to get answers.

What’s an audio book?

What are “dramatized audio books”?

Dramatized audio books are stage-like, “play-life” versions of printed books. You get all the bells and whistles: full cast, music and sound effects. Some people prefer it; some would rather get a simple, told version by an experienced narrator.

Is there a difference between having the author of the physical book tell the audio version, or is it better to have a professional narrator do the job?

Some authors are gifted for both writing and telling their own book. Others are better off leaving it to professional “voice-over calibers”. If you can, listen to a sample of the recorded book that catches your interest. It’ll help you decide if the narrator resonates with you. Some people swear that half the beauty of an audio book is the voice-over quality.

Make sure you have at least one good press release, written in AP style, which you can send out for the lifetime of your book. Learning to write and use powerful optimized press releases can often drive tons of traffic to your website while providing multiple back links that can lead to increased page rank and numerous top ten search engine rankings for your targeted keywords. I’ve seen publishers lose a lot of money paying for expensive display ads, so beware if you do this; I don’t advise it in the beginning — get your feet wet first so you know what you’re doing. Arrange to speak at local, regional and national events that relate to your book topic; bring books along and have an associate sell them at the back of the room.


It’s important to publish a website that focuses on your title; you’ll be able to refer editors and customers and all interested parties to your book information with the click of a mouse. You can give away your book in a raffle at a local function to get more book recognition. If your book fits a specialty market, find a store that fits the genre and offer to leave books on consignment; many publishers have sold thousands of books this way.


Contact any companies, corporations or organizations that might use your book for promotions; offer significant discounts for volume orders or for thousands of copies offer a specified amount above book production costs. Everyone has at least one book in them—I firmly believe that. But bookstore shelves are packed with titles, all competing for readers’ attention. So how can you tell if your book idea is ready for the competitive publishing business?

The key is to target your market and zero in on an unfilled need. Because, yes, the shelves are packed with books—but trust me, there’s plenty of room for you and your book, as long as you can shape your idea into a winning concept. You can use the following strategies to help hone your book idea.

Define Your Book’s Purpose in One Concise Statement

You’ve probably heard of an elevator speech—an intriguing statement about what you do that can be delivered in about a minute. Your book needs one of those, too—a brief, one-sentence statement of the book topic and big-picture benefit readers will gain from it.

Consider your book’s topic. What is your book really about? How will your book benefit your readers? What problems will it solve? If you want to write a creative work, what impact will your story have on your readers?

Be as specific as possible, such as, “My book will help people live within their means and eliminate credit card debt for good.” Distilling your book topic and benefits into one concise statement will give your book the direction it needs to stand out.

Define Your Target Audience

As a writer, the most important person in your professional life is your reader. You have to know your audience, their concerns, their challenges, and their needs. So think about who you’re writing your book for. Who needs/wants the information in your book?

Keep in mind that you can’t be all things to all people, so “everyone” is not an appropriate audience. You need to target a specific market with a specific need that you know how to fill. Going back to the previous example, if you’re writing a book about how to live within your means, your audience is people who are carrying significant credit card or “bad” debt. This is still a huge audience, but it isn’t “everyone.”

Regardless of what topic you plan to write about, you should take time to get a sense of the market. Consider how well books on topics similar to yours have sold in the past, and talk to your clients about whether or not they would buy the book you’re thinking about writing. Writing according to market demands will only help your book sell.

Know Your Competition, and Say Something New

If you know what’s been written about your topic, then you’ll know how to write it better. To find out what books yours will be competing with, go to Amazon.com and search your book topic. What titles come up? Have your read these titles? What will make your book different? How is your book better? What gives your book an edge over the others? Also consider reading a few of the titles—if not all—just to see how the other authors handled the material.

Don’t be put off by a list of hundreds of books on your topic, because that only signifies a healthy market. And if you can fill a gap in the market by providing a different take on the topic, you will be able to get your fair share of book sales despite a long list of competing titles. And don’t think your book has no competition, even if the topic is unique. Every book competes against other books. Even if you’re writing your memoirs and no one else has ever written about you, you are still competing against other books in the memoir genre. How is your story different?

Are you afraid your dream of writing a book will die inside you? May I be honest? It may, if you don’t plan and get it done. With the right planning and knowledge, you can easily write your important message into a book.


Read the tips below and fuel the flame of your book dream again. This time, stretch yourself; dream a bigger dream. Dream after writing your book, you receive continuing income that grows each month.


Dream you become a sought after expert in your field. You gain the added respect of your colleagues and peers because of your book. You receive increased profits leveraged from higher fees charged. Your clients gladly pay them with book author as one of your titles.


Are you ready to revive your dream yet? Here are a few mistakes to correct and make all your book dreams come true:


Mistake 1 Failure to plan at all.


You must realize your book is a product and as a product it has to be marketed. Your plan provides a map for everything you do afterwards. Your book marketing plan is what I describe as your map. It describes your book, what you will do after the book is completed and published. It also describes who you hope to sell your book to as a target audience. In short, you can say your book marketing plan is your roadmap to success and profits.


Mistake 2 Failure to plan how your book will be published.


Whether you choose self-publishing or a traditional publisher, there are pros and cons to either method of publishing your book. If you choose to pursue a traditional publisher for your book, you should know your book proposal is a sales (direct-marketing) document with a sole purpose. It’s single purpose is to convince a publisher that your book will earn a profit, if published.


The proposal should focus on the size and buying power of the targeted market you will attract, the problem your book solves, how your book plans to solve the problem, how different your book is from others already published on the subject and how you plan to promote your book.


Mistake 3 Failure to include the editor’s cut in your plan.


Give yourself a break. You don’t have to write a 350 page book like your colleague to be successful. It doesn’t even have to be 150 pages. Simply write a short book approximately 100 pages long and fill it with your insightful information, your expertise and/or your experiences. You get to shorten your examples and stories. With a short book, you have no pressure to add every piece of information you know about your topic. Instead, if you have too much information divide your material into two books. Your customers will love you for it. They’ll buy both books because they are easy to read and short.


Mistake 4 Failure to add professionalism to your plan.


Plan to make your manuscript and eventually book the best it can be. Invest in what it takes to make it look and read professional. Don’t just get your friends and family to read it for errors; hire an editor. Your editor will not only help you with grammar and spelling but she will help you stay in the same tense. She’ll cut all your passive voice sentences that make your book hard to read.


Mistake 5 Failure to embrace your audience in your plan.

Not everyone will be interested in reading your book. Even so, I’m convinced there’s a community of people in your field waiting for you to solve their problem. What problems does your message solve for them? Develop an audience profile (picture) and keep it in front of you as you write. That way you can visualize a real person to solve problems for.


Additionally, knowing your market before you write will help you write focused, compelling chapters. Writing to a specific person or group of people will keep your readers reading to the end. Write too general and your readers may put your book down and never pick it back up to finish.


Don’t put it off any more. Take your dream off the shelf. If you wait, you can be this time next year without making your dream of writing a successful book come true. You have the plan, the knowledge and the solution. Now write it all down. Your audience is waiting. Plan, correct the mistakes above and write a book that sells well. Make it different. Make it count. Make it yours.
